PHOTO ESSAY: Second Skaters Coalition Competition

This last Saturday yet another group of skaters gathered for the second skateboarding competition in Pagosa Springs. Put on by The Skaters Coalition for Concrete, and sponsored by local businesses and popular skate companies, the gathering was a success.
The morning started off with a pancake breakfast at 8 am with sign-ups and practice proceeding until the competition began at 1 pm. With a $5 sign-up fee, all ages and abilities were welcome.
The Skaters Coalition for Concrete is working to raise money to build a new concrete skate park for the public through creative fund raisers and donations. They would not be able to function without the handful of local volunteering skaters and their friends and family who also recognize that a skate park provides an important outlet for today's independent youth.
Skateboarding is one of the most popular and fast-growing sports in America, and its amazing popularity has placed intense pressure on the dwindling number of places where skating is allowed. The current skate park of Pagosa is several years old and has been showing the wear of many years of hard use for some time now. Lack of a good skate park encourages kids to skate the man-made geography of private property and the restricted public concrete around town.
Anyone wishing to contribute to this noble cause is encouraged to contact the Skaters Coalition for Concrete c/o Karen Hoch by stopping by the Outfitter Skate Shop on Putt Hill or visiting the Outfitter's website,
