Southwest Wilderness Outfitters, whose base camp facility is located on the scenic upper Rio Blanco, maintains a herd of conditioned llamas, and all of the camping gear necessary to take hiking enthusiasts up to fully-outfitted spike camps located throughout the remote and scenic South San Juan Wilderness Area.  The llamas, whose gentle demeanor and soft padded feet are ideally suited  for low-impact travel in this pristine region, can be led on a loose lead, making them suitable for adults and children alike.  Continued...

For a unique twist, however, Southwest Wilderness Outfitters offer a special “adults only” event during the summer months, when the full moon rises over the South San Juans, aptly called the “Full Moon Wilderness Walk and Wine”.  The destination for this event, Quartz Lake, is a crystal clear, high-alpine lake nestled in the peaks at 11,600 feet.   Continued...

Originating at the Little Blanco trailhead, this trip ascends up through large stands of quaking aspen, evergreens and high mountain meadows to a keyhole pass which hales the entrance to an above-timberline ecosystem with incredible views of the Continental Divide.  Lunch is served along the trail, giving the hikers and their wooly companions a refreshing rest, and then the party continues downward to the lake.  Once camp is set up, an appetizer-style dinner of organic and natural meats, cheeses, breads and southwestern fare is served and a selection of organic wines is set out to kick off the evening festivities.

After an evening of howling at the moon, the hikers are treated to a hearty brunch while enjoying the serenity of this back country retreat.  Camp is then taken down, the llamas are packed, and the expedition heads back down the trail at a leisurely pace.  Snacks are served along the trail and the group arrives back at the trailhead in the mid- to late-afternoon timeframe.

If you want to explore the high-altitude regions around Pagosa Springs and enjoy this relatively untouched mountain wilderness without the burden of a heavy backpack, a llama trek with Southwest Wilderness Outfitters may be just the activity for you.

And if you want to spend an evening of camaraderie with your friends or special someone at an absolutely beautiful high-altitude lake, then the Full Moon Wilderness Walk and Wine is an event you have to experience.
