The Relay for Life of Archuleta County Kickoff Event, held last Thursday at the PLPOA Clubhouse, kicked off this year’s fund raising for the American Cancer Society.

Most participants attended the Hawaiian Luau in costume, although long sleeved shirts, sweat pants and thermal underwear could be seen poking out from under muumuus, shorts and other beach attire.  Continued...

It was a cold and bitter evening, but nonetheless, ten teams showed up to register and take advantage of the discount offered to get started.  They included: Boone v. Boone, CenturyLink, Galles Properties, Pagosa High School Key Club, The Ladies of Alpine Lakes Ranch, Mt. View Homemakers, Psiloveredhats, Rotary, San Juan Outdoor Club and the winners of the team with the most members attending the Luau, Tiff’s Lil’ Cubs Childcare Family & Friends!

You have plenty of time to sign up your team if you missed the party, and may do so my contacting Mari Anne Hall by email at marianne.hall@hotmail.com or by phone at 970/731-3381.

Barbara Briles, Event Chair, presided over the evening’s festivities, and opened by asking who present had been affected by cancer in their lives, either personally, with a family member, or friends.  All hands went up.  “This is the reason we Relay, “ she said.  “To honor our loved ones….those who have survived and those who have not.”  She stressed that funds raised go directly to research.

The Traditional PIG Trophy for the team raising the most monies was prominently displayed, and boasted in gold letters on its belly such past winners as Rotary, Methodist Church, Curves, and The Ladies of Alpine Lakes Ranch.  The PIG is now full, has served us well, and the search for a new trophy is currently underway.  We are looking for an appropriate place in which to permanently display our PIG, and are taking suggestions.

There are still three Chairmanships yet to be filled: SURVIVORSHIP, ADVOCACY, and MISSION — and if you are interested you may call Barbara Briles at 970/264-216.  The Relay for Life will be held on June 18-19, again on the field at Pagosa Springs High School.

Please plan to attend.

Sponsors for the evening included Alco, Chato’s, City Market West, Farrago’s, Giant Service Station, Pagosa Shell Station, Plaza Grill, Ramon’s, Subway West, and TJ’s Family Café.
