Steamworks Brewing Co., as part of Durango Mountain Resort’s monthly Friday Afternoon Club festivities on Mar. 5, reprised its popular “Clam Bake” and generated $1,000 for La Plata County Search and Rescue (LPCSAR).
“A bowl of clams and a pint of beer multiplied by a lot of skiers can go a long way,” said Brian McEachron, Steamworks co-founder. “The sun made a much-welcomed showing and we went through 140 lbs. of clams and 30 lbs. of crawfish.”
The Clam Bake, now set to be an annual Steamworks event at DMR benefitting LPSCAR, featured slope-side service on “the beach” outside Purgy’s for skiers and riders: a fresh, hot bowl of “steamed” clams and a Steamworks beer for $7. Popular Santa Fe DJ Melanie Moore, a three-time Santa Fe Reporter readers’ selection as Best Local DJ, spun tunes to add to the festivities.
“We initiated the Clam Bake five years ago as a way to enhance the ski experience and raise funds for local non-profits,” said Kris Oyler, Steamworks co-founder. “We’ve since learned that though Search and Rescue provides a very vital service, the organization is not that well known, and it doesn’t receive the donations it needs. We want to help alleviate that to as great of an extent as possible.”
La Plata County Search & Rescue, a non-profit organization under the direction of the La Plata County Sheriff's Office, has provided remote rescue and emergency services in the county since 1981.
Steamworks organized Clam Bakes at resorts from Taos to Winter Park over the past years benefitting a variety of organizations including the National Center for Disabled Skiers and the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps.
“We want to keep it all local in coming years,” added Oyler. “It’ll be all about La Plata County Search and Rescue.”
