A Two-Minute Marriage Builder
Mark S. Disbrow | 1/24/12
Back to the News Summaries
Love and Respect. Aren’t these two words beautiful? Every woman dreams of being loved and every man desires to be respected. These are fundamental needs God has woven into us.
The Bible teaches the duty of husbands and wives in Ephesians 5:33, “Let each individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect her husband.”
Most marriages need more love and more respect. If the husband loves his wife, she will respond with honor and respect. If the wife honors and respects her husband, he will respond with love—often without even realizing it. This is an ‘energizing cycle’ and it makes a marriage relationship flourish.
So many marriages are stuck in the ‘crazy cycle’... a harsh comment evoking a negative response fired back creating an inner hurt. This cycle has been going on so long neither party can identify when this it actually started. This ‘crazy cycle’ will spin and spin until either the marriage is broken or the cycle is stopped.
If your marriage is stuck in the ‘crazy cycle’, break it by following your part in the ‘energizing cycle’ (see above). God doesn’t dictate whether it is the husband or the wife who is responsible for the first action of breaking this ‘crazy cycle’. But if the need to stop the cycle is important to you, be the first to make the change.
Next week, I’ll give additional practical “how-to’s”. Till then, determine now to give either love or respect to your spouse.
