Nikki Taylor's letter regarding joining the county and the town is a very solid idea. It's been talked about before, but no action. Not only could we save tax money, but eliminate confusion about who someone needs to go to for some services. (Building dept, roads, police, etc.)
The Fire Dept. did this many years ago, with great success. It would be wonderful if all citizens could participate in elections regarding officials and other ballot issues. There really is a small population and we should all be working for the same goals and services.
 Hopefully Nikki will be sending her letter to the weekly SUN so a wider readership can consider her ideas. Any issue like this could be proposed to be a ballot item and with enough signatures, we could make this happen!
No doubt the current elected officials would not be in favor of this type of government, but I think it is time for us to consider it.
All the "hot items" of the moment — Walmart, The Town Park (proposed "amusement park"), the Geothermal Garden — and many other proposals affect all the people in the county, not just the town. I'm sure there are many people in the area that would be willing to gather signatures to place this on the next ballot available. A knowledgeable attorney could draw it up, being sure to close all loopholes.
Every registered voter (town and county) should educate themselves on this possible item and get behind it. |
