Fire Departments Encouraged to Apply for Funding
Tara Trujillo | 1/30/12
Back to the News Summaries
Last week, U.S. Senator Mark Udall (CO) encouraged fire departments across Colorado to apply for a competitive grant program to help them hire more firefighters and recruit and retain volunteer firefighters.
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants are administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and give Colorado fire departments the chance to compete for a portion of $380 million to improve or restore their staffing and deployment capabilities.
"In this tough economy, Colorado fire departments have had to make do with fewer resources and firefighters. The SAFER grants assist our communities by providing critical funding to keep our fire departments sufficiently staffed," Udall said. "I encourage fire departments throughout Colorado to apply for these competitive grants so they can hire additional firefighters and more effectively respond to emergencies in their communities."
Past awardees include the Lyons Fire Protection District, Durango Fire and Rescue Authority, Larkspur Fire Protection District and Wheat Ridge Fire Protection District.
Colorado's fire departments should
visit the FEMA website
for more information on applying. The application period runs from January 30 to 3 p.m. MT February 24, 2012.
The SAFER Help Desk and Fire Program Specialists will be available throughout the application period at 1-866-274-0960 or via e-mail at firegrants@dhs.gov.
To request a letter of support on behalf of an application, fire departments should
contact Udall's regional office nearest to them.
