This Friday, February 3, the Pagosa Nordic Club invites all to their monthly free "Sunset/Moonrise Soup & Chili Ski Social." Sunset for this Friday is at 5:22pm but folks can come play any time at the beautiful Coyote Hill nordic site 6.5 miles North on Piedra Road.
It's nice wide open scenic skiing with a good parking lot, almost directly across from Turkey Springs Trails parking, and it has easy access to the groomed trails.
This is a fun family friendly event; folks can ski together and watch the sunset and moonrise skiing at their own pace; and can reconvene with other outdoor enthusiasts for warm food including hot chocolate and s'mores around the campfire.
Wearing warm layers and bringing a headlamp or flashlight can create more fun memory making.
The next day, Saturday, February 4, Pagosa Nordic hosts another Free Learn to Ski Clinic at the same location beginning at 10am until noon. Local ski shops offer discount rentals for this event.
Cross country skiing, whether it is skate style or classic (kick and glide) is a great way to get in and stay in shape during Pagosa's long winters; and it strengthens balance skills which help keep us upright in our slippery driveways and sidewalks. PNC requests only that you email them at PagosaNordic@gmail.com so they know how many volunteer instructors for each skill level, to have present. If you can't email ahead of time, please attend anyway, as Pagosa Nordic Club will accommodate all eager learners of all abilities as best they can.
The most current area groomed X-C Ski Trails for Skate Skiing and Classic X-C Skiing include 10km in Alberta Park compliments of the Wolf Creek Ski Area, 12 km at the West Fork trail head groomed by the Pagosa Nordic Club and 15km at Coyote Hill groomed by the Pagosa Ranger District. Additionally, the Wolf Creek Trail Blazer Snowmobile Club grooms a number of multi-use winter trails around the Pagosa area, for snowmobiling, skiing and snowshoeing. All groomed trails are free to use, so please take advantage of some of these easily accessed winter opportunities to play outside!
Updated free Activity and Event information can be viewed at the Club website. The Pagosa Nordic Club is a non profit, 100% volunteer organization with a mission “to enhance winter recreational opportunities in Pagosa Springs by maintaining accessible groomed winter trails for skate skiing, classic cross country skiing & snowshoeing for all ability levels and to encourage and promote the use of these winter trails through education, marketing and events”.
The club relies on membership donations, sponsorships and trail use donations to cover operational expenses and capital equipment investments.
To become a club member or donate to the club, please check the Club website for details. |
