Square Top Theatre opened its inaugural season Thursday evening past with a simply delightful presentation of  “Much Ado About Nothing” by William Shakespeare (or whomever one happens to believe should be attributed authorship).

Director Shane Fuller and his talented cast and crew presented the story in a very creative and modern style. The intent of presenting Shakespearean material in a manner to be enjoyed by enthusiasts and those among us whose interest in these works is, let us say …  none, was accomplished quite successfully. Director Fuller and Producer Charles Pepiton credit the collaborative efforts of the entire company in creating the unique presentation of this classic work.

What this new professional theatre group presented was an opportunity for the audience to enjoy themselves. The opening night audience, while small, was receptive. The cast and crew’s efforts were justly noticed and rewarded. I am not going to write much about the staging, costuming and technical approaches except to mention they are worth the price of admission. Some experiences are better enjoyed without too much of even this old biddy’s prejudice.

The cast and crew are a mixture of talented professionals and University theater students. This approach provides a nice mixture of creative talent within the company and a lot of energy on and off stage.

The talented Lorraine Chavez displays clever cunning with economical movement. Amanda McLendon presents her talent with an amazing boundless energy. This combination provides an excellent female cast and challenges the male cast to hold up their end. The talent of Nathaniel Niemi, including his infectious grin, with able assistance from Jonathan Moots and Clay Nail, who each posture physically very well, allowed the males to hold their own on opening night. As the play is a basic battle of the sexes, you can be the judge of which has the upper hand during the performance you attend. It is a treat to observe how these five actors portray the seventeen plus characters.

The Square Top Theatre group needs to be complimented on the professional approach they apply to all aspects of their efforts. They have created an interesting venue within the structure of the Powerhouse Youth Center on the East side of Town Park. The theater provides tiered seating on three sides of the stage accommodating 170 to 200 attendees. The sightlines are excellent. The acoustics and lighting are adequate for presenting professional productions.

Yes, I can be a grouchy old lady. This trait has been noted by my legion of dedicated readers and my seven quite vocal detractors. Some of the seedy seven are not pleased to read of my return – of this I am sure. I could, and will, mention that Amanda’s energy seems to cause her to speak quite rapidly at times and the actors are in shadows at times.

One important note, metal folding chairs are utilized - a little fanny cushion will enhance your enjoyment. The run time of the show is under two hours, including intermission, and the fast paced action keeps your attention even without a cushion. If I seem favorably impressed by this group – I am. Plus, it is great to have professional presentations locally to attend and of course review. I changed my travel plans and endured the Fourth crowds to be able to attend the opening. I am very glad I did so.

While most of the company will leave Pagosa Springs at the end of July to pursue other activities and/or resume their studies, Charles will be staying. His wife Rebekah, Square Top Theatre’s Marketing Director, is the new Art Teacher at Pagosa Springs High School. They are a welcome addition, as artists and individuals, to our community.

Charles will be directing “$100 Gummi Bears” by Square Top Theatre’s Resident Playwright Shane Fuller. This show will open July 12th and run in rotating repertory with “Much Ado About Nothing” through the remainder of July. “$100 Gummi Bears” is intended for mature audiences while “Much Ado About Nothing” is intended for the entire family.

Admission is $14 for Adults, $11.50 for Seniors and $8 for those 12 and under. The matinee offerings of “Much Ado About Nothing” on July 21st and 29th provide a special family rate. For additional information call 940-782-6587.
Tickets are available at the Theatre Box Office Wednesday through Saturday 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, online at squaretoptheatre.com and at the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center.
