I attended the Town of Pagosa Springs Parks and Recreation Commission meeting last Wednesday and was pleased to learn about the latest developments concerning the construction of a new skateboard park here in Pagosa. Not only is the Town in the process of acquiring land near the new sports complex on south 5th St. for the park, there is a line item in the proposed 2008 budget, allocating $30,000 to match any fund raising efforts by the community. What ever the community and town can come up with would then be presented to the GO Colorado organization for a grant that would pay 70% of the project cost. With the success of the skateboard competition last summer, raising nearly $1000 for the Skaters Coalition for Concrete, there is already a base of community funds. Now, with the new commitments from the town, the Skaters Coalition for Concrete is planning more fundraising events to try and reach the $30,000 mark set by the Town. There is talk of a concert at the community center in late December featuring local bands, a showing of snowboard and skateboard films at Liberty Theatre, and sponsorship of the park by purchasing tiles or bricks to be displayed on a “sponsors” wall at the park. A web site will be set up soon with the details. Look for more info from the Skaters Coalition for Concrete in coming weeks. The future of skateboarding in Pagosa is NOW! |
