High Country Squares is a newly formed square dance club here in Pagosa Springs. The group has been learning the Mainstream Program of Western Square Dance since last September, taught by Louis Norton of the Durango Square Dance Club. They had their graduation dance on May 4th at the Community Center, followed by a dinner party at Boss Hogs. They are all now considered "square dancers" and have the privilege of attending any square dance in the world.
Through the summer they will be having two types of square dance opportunities. For beginners who would like to give this fun activity a try, there will be introductory lessons held at the Pagosa Lakes Property Owner's Association Clubhouse, 230 Port Ave. (Pagosa Lakes Clubhouse Facilities are an Amenity of the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association, Pagosa Springs, Colorado) These beginner square dance lessons will be on Mondays, starting June 2nd, from 6:30 till 8:00. Our caller and teacher will be Jim Park, who recently moved to Pagosa from the Detroit area, where he was a caller for several clubs, has several of his own square dance CD's and is often joined by his wife Fae in the singing calls. He promises to make this an easy, fun experience for everyone. For those of you that already know how to square dance, or maybe just need a quick refresher, there will be an opportunity for you to dance also on Mondays at the PLPOA Clubhouse. From 8:00 to 9:30 Jim will be calling mainstream dances with some review where needed. We'd love to have experienced dancers join the High Country Square too. You're also invited to come to the beginner lessons and help the new dancers learn, we need angels. Cost for the evening of dancing is $7.00 per couple ($3.50 per single). Square dancing is a great chance to meet new people, learn something new, exercise your body and mind and have a "laugh out loud" good time. Just bring your enthusiasm, your sense of humor and your right & left feet!
For more information call Lorna Fox (731-5525) or Jim Park (731-9910) Hope to see you on Mondays this summer. |
