On Sunday, May 18, The Pagosah Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear a sermon entitled 'A Theology of Privilege,' by Antonia Won, of Albuquerque. She points out that “Racism is an issue that continues to plague American society. It is impossible to separate questions of racism from questions of class. Unitarian Universalists espouse diversity, yet our congregations are exceptionally ‘white’ and middle class in their demographic make-up.”
In further exploring this denominational problem, she goes on to assert that “Examining our assumptions and theology of privilege may be part of our responsibility for social justice.”
A third generation Unitarian Universalist, Antonia grew up in Quebec, Canada, worshiping in the Church of the Great Outdoors. This informed her initial choice to train as a landscape architect, specializing in theme park planning. She was involved in the design of Universal Studios Orlando, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. After graduating from the Vancouver School of Theology, she interned at First Unitarian Church of Victoria, and is now interning at First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque.
Nature writing is a special art form, and Henry David Thoreau was one of its original authors. The children’s program will hear about this friend of historic Unitarians and, like Thoreau, make their own nature journals. They’ll be filled with wondrous discoveries from the outside world.
The service begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Pagosah Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, Unit B-15, Greenbriar Plaza. Turn east on Greenbrier Drive off of North Pagosa by the Fire Station, then left into the back parking lot and look for the big sign. All are welcome. |
