The Creede Repertory Theatre (CRT) opened the 2008 Summer Season with a simply delightful production of Meet The Beasts. I strongly suggest you include this production in your summer theatre plans. Suitable and enjoyable for humans of all ages and dispositions, Meet The Beasts made even this crusty curmudgeon smile and chuckle or perhaps light up and laugh.
Danny Durkin as Aesop and Jake Walker as Fontaine took us on a movement and music filled adventure suitable for and enjoyed fully by the enthusiastic audience of children of all ages. These two talented actors are well matched and bring out the best in each other by what appeared to be a healthy competition for attention. All aspects of the production are professionally presented, as one would expect from one of the best professional repertory theatres in the country. CRT demonstrates again why they were chosen by The National Theatre Conference as the 2007 recipient of the Outstanding Theatre Award for achievement by a not-for-profit American theatre.
Meet The Beasts was originally commissioned by Creede Repertory Theatre (CRT) as an original production for their 2007 Young Audience Outreach Tour.
The success of the Meet The Beasts performances at forty-six schools for fourteen thousand and six hundred and eighty seven students prompted CRT to schedule this delightful work in the 2008 Summer Season for children of all ages.
The very creative story forming the book for this musical is based on The Fables of Aesop and La Fontaine. Jeff Carey, the award winning playwright whose plays Pan and Boone, Emilia’s Tree and Lullaby Bay have been performed at CRT, wrote the book and the lyrics. The multi-talented Jessica Jackson whose acting, singing, improv performances and directing have made her an attendee favorite at CRT, as well as audiences across the country, serves as Director and she also wrote the music with additional music by Jake Walker. CRT pros Ryan Prince, Jennifer Archer, Ryan Wentworth and Christel Elsen provide the Scenic Design, Costuming, Lighting and Stage Management.
Note: The creative collaboration of Jeff Carey’s writing and Jessica Jackson’s music continues as their newest work, SCRUFF TURBO and the CHILDREN of the FUTURE, is featured as The Creede Initiative’s 2008 Theatre for and by Children offering opening on July 2nd. Make your plans and reservations early as the Children’s Theatre offering sells out quickly.
Information on the entire CRT 2008 Season and securing tickets is available online at creederep.org as well as ticketing through the Box Office at 719-658-2540.
Tony’s picks: A trip to Creede Repertory Theatre without stopping at Kip’s Grille (the Creede restaurant, a close cousin to Kip's Grille in Pagosa Springs) for lunch or dinner is just not acceptable. On this trip we enjoyed a late lunch choosing the Filet marinated in Kip’s special juice = very tasty. Kip and Kim are expanding their wine offerings and the Pinot Noir Kip provided for our tasting was excellent. The food, staff and ambiance at Kip’s Grille is reliably very good and a pleasant respite. |
