Two separate lightning strikes were the apparent causes of two large power outages in Archuleta and La Plata Counties yesterday. La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) crews responded and restored power to nearly all affected customers within hours of the two strikes.
At approximately 3:00am yesterday morning, June 30, about 560 customers in Archuleta County lost power, and a morning press release announced the cause as unknown. The last 128 customers affected by that electrical outage regained power at approximately 1:15pm yesterday.
Crews on the scene discovered a faulted underground cable, lightning arrestor and OCR that appear to have been damaged by lightning. All have been repaired.
The outage began at 2:38am, and initially affected 562 customers along CR 200, CR 400, Lost Valley of the San Juans and some areas in the Town of Pagosa. All but the 128 customers in the area of the fault were restored by approximately 7:30am.
Power has been restored to the last of the customers affected by a lightning strike that disrupted power to Tri-State Generation & Transmission’s 115 kv substation in Hesperus. LPEA crews have been on the scene and the 1,158 customers in the Durango Mountain Resort/Purgatory area regained power just prior to 4pm.
At 1:43pm., Tri-State’s equipment locked open, cutting power to 3,643 customers east and north of Durango. Within minutes, however, power had been restored to all customers except the customers in the Durango Mountain Resort/Purgatory area.
At this time the only other outage being reported is at Tall Timber Resort. LPEA crews are en route on a Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad putt-putt car. |
