Accommodating Nursing Mothers This year there is new Colorado law – the Workplace Accommodation for Nursing Mother’s Act – which takes effect July 7, 2008. The law requires workplaces to make reasonable accommodation for nursing mothers. Coincidentally, the theme for this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, is Mother Support: Going for the Gold – Everybody Wins! Mothers deserve and need empathetic listening; basic, accurate and timely information; skilled and practical help; and encouragement. For more information on breast-feeding or how employers can help support breast-feeding in the workplace, call Betzi at 247-5702, ext. 210. For a summary on the new law, go to this website.
2nd Anniversary of Colorado Clean Indoor Air Law Colorado is celebrating its two-year anniversary of the smoke-free law on July 1, 2008. To help celebrate and acknowledge Colorado's work and dedication, an interactive SmokeFree Colorado timeline was developed. This timeline is a powerful visual demonstration of positive momentum toward clean indoor laws in Colorado and the nation. You can watch the video on San Juan Basin Health’s website.
Smoke-free laws are proving to be an effective way to improve public health by reducing people's exposure to secondhand smoke, which has been shown to be harmful to both adults and children. Colorado offers several resources to smokers and other tobacco users who want to quit. The Colorado Quitline 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) is a free telephone coaching service that supports people in their quitting process and offers free nicotine patches. |
