Back to School Immunizations
Back-to-School immunizations are encouraged BEFORE school starts.  Monday Immunization Clinics are held on Mondays 10:30am to 5:30pm by appointment only. Most children in La Plata County qualify for the low cost vaccines provided by the Federal and State supported Vaccines for Children Program. The Colorado School Board made a change two years ago that mandates proof of required vaccinations be presented by the first day of school.  Parents can beat the back-to-school rush by calling to schedule their child’s appointment at 247-5702.

Pediatric Neurology Clinics in August
There will be several HCP Pediatric Neurology Clinics with Dr. Tom Reiley in southwest Colorado in late August. The Clinic will be in Pagosa Springs on August 27, in Cortez on August 28 and in Durango on August 29.  HCP is the Healthcare Program for Children with Special Needs. For information, call 247-5702, ext. 1529.

New Contact for the Caregiver Support Program
Dawn Simard will now be managing the Title III E Caregiver Support Program as well as some portion of our other grants provided through San Juan Basin Health.  The Caregiver Support Program is designed to assist Caregivers who provide for their chronically ill and/or disabled loved one over 60 years of age.  Potential assistance to the Caregiver includes respite care or counseling.  For further information, please call Dawn Simard at 970-247-5702, ext 240.

REMINDER: Prevent Animal-Borne Diseases This Summer
Summertime brings the risk of contracting certain animal-borne diseases, such as rabies, West Nile virus, Western equine encephalitis, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, plague, tularemia, and Colorado tick fever. These diseases can be carried by various animals and insects such as rodents, mosquitoes or ticks and then transmitted to humans. They also are more common during the summer when people tend to be outdoors more often and wild animals and insects are active.

State health epidemiologists and San Juan Basin Health Department officials recommend that everyone help control the presence of rodents and mosquitoes around their home. And, when heading outdoors particularly to areas where wild animals and insects are active, wear insect repellant, appropriate clothing and protect pets from fleas and ticks.  Do not handle sick or dead animals or animal waste. For more information about these diseases and precautions, visit www.sjbhd.org/en/common-disease-in-our-region.

Employment Opportunities
Please check the San Juan Basin Health Department website for up-to-date job opportunities.
