The self-satistied cliché asserts, "If you can remember the '60s, you weren't there."
But that hasn't stop an adventurous threesome of Pagosa Springs musicians — lead guitarist and vocalist Robbie Pepper, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Mark Sudden, and bass guitarist and vocalist Bill Hudson — from struggling to remember some of the classic rock 'n' roll tunes from that bygone era. Calling themselves "BehaveYourself" with no space between the two words in a classic '60s fashion, the group plays a mix of old Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, the Eagles and Hank Williams.
Apparently, they don't remember that Hank Williams was from the '50s, and Neil Young and the Eagles were from the '70s.
"Gratefully, somebody made recordings of those old rock songs," says lead singer Mark Sudden, who incidentally owns Howlin' Wolf Music located in the Mountain Plaza at the top of Putt Hill, open from 10:00am until 6:00pm most days. "We all three have an especially fuzzy memory of the Rolling Stones, but by listening to old recordings, we've been able to decipher some of the words. And luckily they only used about three or four chords back then."
The three Pagosa singers will be joined — in a live performance on Sunday, July 6 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at the Pagosa Pubworks — by Durango drummer Dan Cook, who usually wears a cowboy hat and avoids singing whenever possible. "You don't want to hear me sing," Cook claims. "Even songs from the '50s." Cook was probably referring to the poor, usually-scratched, quality of old '50s records.
Bass player Bill Hudson explains the band's unusual name. "Our band has gone by numerous names over the past ten years, but most of the names were too hard to pronounce after two beers," Hudson says. "Robbie came up with this clever name three gigs ago, and so far it's stuck. I'm not sure, but I think the name — BehaveYourself — a subtle reference to 'BE-' as in the Beatles, and the '-HAVE' part might be referring to 'Purple HAZE' by Jimi Hendrix except with the 'z' changed to 'v'. 'BehazeYourself' wouldn't really make sense, even back in the '60s."
The band invites music lovers of all ages to join them for some musical experimentation at the Pagosa Pubworks on North Pagosa Boulevard, this Sunday, July 6.
"With any luck, the audience will remember the performance afterwards," says lead guitarist Robbie Pepper. "And with even more luck, we will remember the tunes while we are playing them." |
