Four artists with unique talents will participate in this year˙s Pagosa Springs Artist Studio Tour through Wild Spirit Gallery; Elizabeth Claire Baldwin (of ECB Creations), Greg Hudson, Randall Davis and Jeanine Malaney. The Gallery, which offers Fine Art of the West, represents these and many other fine artists of the Pagosa Springs area. One of the four artists participating through the Gallery is Greg Hudson, who works in kiln-fired stained glass. Hudson˙s career as an artist is unmatched; his story is heart-touching and tear-provoking.  Continued...

Hudson˙s interest in art first started in high school and has reemerged throughout his life. After a tour of duty in the Air Force, Hudson went back to school to become an art teacher ... at least until he was to grade students' work. Hudson could not tell someone how he thought a creative piece should look.  Everyone has their own vision and concept of what art is. Upon learning that he was unable to grade such a subjective subject, one door closed and another opened.

After an accident in 1980 that broke seven of Hudson˙s bones, he was diagnosed with epilepsy. His resulting physical limitations forced the use of his left hand instead of his right. In 1994, Hudson was discovered to have a brain mass of malformed blood vessels (AVM) that had to be removed. Numerous surgeries later, Hudson was put back together, but not before losing a significant portion of his sight and his ability to drive. His life once again returned to his first passion: art. During Hudson˙s recovery he discovered the beauty of glass. His mentor, an industrial arts teacher with the Navajo Nation, is the man Hudson gives credit to for preserving his sanity and teaching him stained glass.

For eleven years, Hudson crafted stained glass until he was introduced to the kiln, which fires his imagination and rejuvenated his life. Hudson will have his kiln onsite at Wild Spirit Gallery during the studio tour, passionately talking about his process and how working in glass has transformed his life.
